The Islamic State (IS) militant group has announced that its West African affiliate Boko Haram has a new leader. Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who was previously spokesman for the Nigerian-based Islamists, is featured in the latest issue of an IS magazine. It does not say what has become of the group’s former leader Abubakar Shekau. (BBC)
In another blow to bitcoin, one of the world’s biggest exchanges of the cryptocurrency suffered a massive security breach. Bitfinex, a bitcoin exchange registered in Hong Kong announced Tuesday (Aug. 2) it had suffered a security breach that has forced the company to halt all trading indefinitely. The company had yet to identify the cause of the breach, but said it would work with law enforcement and take down its site as an investigation ensues. (Quartz)
