Human rights groups are now accusing members of the Nigerian military of covering up the killing of 100s of members of a Shia group last December in the northern city of Zaria. The Nigerian military claims the Shia group tried to assassinate the head of the army who was visiting the city and have said the recent report from Amnesty International, ‘lacks objectivity’ (BBC Africa Live).
Idriss Deby has won his 5th term as president of Chad by defeating more than a dozen opponents. Opposition leader Saleh Kebzabo however is accusing the president of voter fraud and has said his group does not recognize the outcome of what they are calling an “electoral stick-up” (VOA News).
ICYMI President Muhammadu Buhari needs ‘more time’ before he’ll sign Nigeria’s 2016 budget bill. A government minister said earlier this week there would be further delays before the legislation can take effect while Buhari and his aids meet to discuss, “areas of concern”, as Africa’s top oil producer continues to deal with the fallout from the global decline in crude oil prices (CNBC Africa).
